Swedish Seven Years War (1756 - 1762)

Army Lists

This page is an attempt to update the army lists for the Swedish army in Pomerania during the Seven Years War (1756 - 1763). I have concentrated on the format in the 'Koenigs Krieg' rules, but the information should be usable for other rules formats. Please email me if you have any questions or comments.

General Notes:

Sweden, and the Swedish army, at this time was in sever difficulties. The Great Northern War had meant the loss of much of Sweden's empire and had caused severe economic difficulties. It was therefore a very understrength Swedish force that participated in the Seven Years War. Units were generally only 1/3 to 1/2 the strength that they were supposed to be.While that participation was generally half hearted and designed more to justify Sweden's share of the expected dividing up of Prussian territories after the war.

I have therefore devised three lists for the Swedes in the Seven Years War. Firstly the full army for people wishing to use the army for 'what if' campaigns or battles. Secondly the forces that were actually used in Pomerania during the war, but at their full listed strength. Finally the army in Pomerania as it would really have been. For this last one I have worked on 1/2 strength for the units and sometimes have had to combine units to make reasonable gaming units.

For UNIT COSTS the first number is as per the existing rules, the second is to my suggested amendments. Click here to look at the Koenigs Krieg alternative points values page.

There are two sizes given for the cavalry under the REAL SIZE column. This is because different sources give different establishments for these units.

The Full Swedish Army:

Note: The official strength of the Hussars varied considerable over the period. The Bla Hussars strength is listed as 250 or 1250 or 1050 or 840. While the Gul Hussars could be 625 or 750 or 840. have listed the maximum and minimum strengths in the table

The Swedish Army in Pomerania (Full strength):

Note 1: The Provincial Infantry actually consisted of the following units.

  • 1 regiment of 2 battalions of dismounted Dragoons - 500 men per btn

  • 9 regiments of 966 men - I have counted them as a battalion for gaming purposes, but would have been 2 battalions in reality.

  • 3 regiments of 894 men - I have counted them as a battalion for gaming purposes, but would have been 2 battalions in reality.

  • 2 regiments of 840 men - I have counted them as a battalion for gaming purposes, but would have been 2 battalions in reality.

  • 3 individual battalions from a regiment - 644 men.

  • 2 individual battalions from a regiment - 560 men.

Note 2: The Light Infantry actually consisted of 3 units. 100 men from the Jager Corps, 400 men from the Free Corps and 200 French deserters. I have combined these together to make a reasonable unit.

Note 3: There were actually 4 units of Dragoons. With establishments of 780 / 1000, 630 / 750, 305 / 375 and 260 / 250. I have therefore combined the 2 smallest units into one reasonable sized unit.

Note 4: The official strength of the Hussars varied considerable over the period. The Bla Hussars strength is listed as 250 or 1250 or 1050 or 840. While the Gul Hussars could be 625 or 750 or 840. have listed the maximum and minimum strengths in the table

The Swedish Army in Pommerania (Realistic):

Note: Nearly all the units in this list are combined to form decent sized units. For the infantry the units are generally a regiment, i.e. the two battalions together. Although some units of the Provincial Infantry and the Light Infantry are battalions from different regiments combined together. Similarly the cavalry are usually different regiments combined together.
