The second of two Successor Kingdom battles fought in April 2025 (the first can be found here), this game was played at Tom's house and I am grateful for his text and images.
In this week's game, the two Successor forces have recruited some more exotic units, Cassander bringing two units of elephants and Lysimachus has recruited two units of scythed chariots.
Cassander’s forces deploy on the left side of the table with their phalanx and light infantry javelins deployed to move to the left of the cultivated area with their peltasts and elephants deployed on the right to take the cultivated area and to protect the flank while all the cavalry are deployed on the left to push back their opposition and to then threaten the flank of their phalanx.
Lysimachus matches their opponent's phalanx deployment with his javelin men deployed to their left, masking the cultivated area and the scythed chariots deployed to their right. Their supporting troops are in a more regular formation with a mix of peltasts and cavalry on each flank.
As the two sides advance Lysimachus' Companion cavalry and light cavalry move round the right of the central cultivated area and engage the opposing peltasts and elephants Their peltasts and light javelins move into the cultivated area and engage the opposition peltasts. On the other flank Cassander’s cavalry move forward masking the opposing chariots with their light horse.
In the ensuing engagement, Lysimachus' right flank manages to hold back the opposition cavalry. Only as the two phalanxes finally engage does one unit of Cassander’s Greek cavalry manage to break through and charge the flank of the phalanx. In the last move the phalanxes come to blows and in the ensuing melee the Lysimachus phalanx begins to be pushed back. Cassander’s peltast’s on the right gain the upper hand in the cultivated area while delaying the advance of Lysimachus' Companion cavalry.
So the second battle between the two successors also goes to Cassander.
