With this game being an encounter game it starts with only each side's Recon on the table. Surprisingly the Russians gain the initiative and get the first move.
The Russians concentrate the bulk of their units in the centre to move towards the central hill with objective ‘A’ on their left and objective B on the road junction to the left. Using the hill to cover their movements the Medium Tank Regiment is to move to the right to take objective B while the Light Tank Regiment moves to the left of the hill to cover Objective ‘A’. The two battalions of motorised infantry follow up the two tank regiments to occupy the hill and the two objectives. On the Russian right the 2nd Medium Tank Regiment is deployed on the far right to move over the hill and round the co-operative farm to take objective ‘C’. Due to a mix up in deployment the Russian tanks on the right are devoid of infantry support.
The Germans form their units into two combined arms teams each with two leaders and two tank companies with motorised grenadiers and support units. These are deployed on the left with orders to move forward to take objectives ‘B’ and ‘C’ and with dummy blinds primarily deployed on the right to move towards objectives ‘D’ & ‘E’.
In the first move, the Russian armoured units rush forward to their three chosen objectives with the two infantry battalions moving up behind the centre to hold the ground. The first German combined arms team moves forward and engages in a lengthy fire fight with the Russian Medium Tank Regiment holding objective ‘C’: this shakes the Russian armour, causing one company to rout but the other two companies hold and there is a close range fight for the next three moves. The accompanying Panzer Grenadiers skirt the tank engagement and take out the Russian support elements and a company of infantry moving to support the Russian tanks.
In the centre the two companies of German armour engage the Russian Medium Tank Battalion in a lengthy fire fight over objective ‘B’ while the two companies of Grenadiers act in support and guard the right flank while the German armoured Recon units chase off their Russian horse mounted counterparts. The Russian infantry hold the hill and move up to occupy objectives ‘A’ and ‘B’. The Light Armoured Regiment deploys on the left and shell the German infantry holding the co-operative farm. The German HQ armoured company with attached Panzer VI’s routs two medium tank companies and moves to objective ‘B’, forgetting that they have no infantry support. They suffer hits from Russian A/T guns and infantry A/T rifles and become shaken.
At the beginning of the last move the Russians are winning the game 100 points to 50 and the Germans have it all to do to pull the game back.
In the last bound the Germans fail to get any artillery support but do gain two ground attack from their air support. These are used in conjunction with the armoured companies on the left to finally rout the remaining two companies of Russian tanks (a total of four hits and the leader hit three times) and to occupy Objective ‘3’. In the centre the German HQ Company fail their test facing the Russian infantry on objective ‘B’ (caused by a lack of infantry support). However, the 2nd Armoured Company routs the last of the Russian medium tanks and overrun the Russian infantry on objective ‘B, occupying it.
By the end of the last round there was a major turnaround with the Germans having 130 points to the Russians 40 points. Despite the 90 point difference it was a tight game with the Russians on the end of a unbelievable number of poor morale rolls (a record number of 20’s on the morale die)
