In this game the French army deploys up to 18” onto the table with their 1st Division on the right, the 3rd Division in the centre and the 2nd Division on the left flank. The corps artillery allocated two batteries to each of the 1st and 3rd Divisions and one battery to the 2nd Division. The French Cavalry Division was positioned in reserve on the hill behind the centre.
At the beginning of the game the Prussian Cavalry Division enters the table on the central road. Then, in the next move, the 5th Corps commander and the bulk of the 9th Division follow the cavalry on the central road and the commander of the 9th Division, together with his cavalry regiment and one infantry regiment, advances along the right hand road. On turn three, the 10th Division arrives on the left hand road.
Over the next few turns the cavalry and the 5th Corps commander advance in the centre, coming under long range fire from the artillery attached to the French 1st Division. The 9th Division commander slowly moves forward to try and locate the enemy's left flank. The 10th Division moves slowly forward to cross the bridge and deploys against the enemy right.
The Prussian advance continues as the 10th Division slowly deploys through the village by the bridge, coming under long range fire from the artillery attached to the 3rd Division. In the centre, the Prussian infantry move slowly through the cultivated area engaging in a fire fight with the French 1st Division while the Corps and Division artillery deploy to give supporting fire. When the commander of the 9th Division comes under fire he realises that he is facing the strongest French division (six regiments of infantry and a battery of artillery) and deploys his infantry in a village while he accompanies his cavalry to try and move round the French flank.
In the centre, the Prussian advance is brought to a halt by heavy defensive fire from French infantry and artillery, with one regiment routing. The Corps commander moves the Cavalry Division round to threaten the flank of the French centre but one brigade is routed when it tries to charge the French infantry. Meanwhile, the French C-in-C brings up his reserve cavalry to counter the French cavalry.
On the German left the Wurttemberg division arrives but despite a rapid start they are held up by the bridge and a lack of initiative and only manage to deploy their artillery, losing one battery to French infantry fire before they manage to get into action. The Prussian 10th Division’s attack is halted by the defence fire from the French Division.
At the end of the game the French C-in-C had managed to reach the 2nd Division on the left and changed their orders so they were moving round to threaten the Prussian right which was only being held by the Corps Artillery. It was becoming a race to see if the French left and centre could break the Prussian right before the Wurttemberg Division could deploy.
