Maurice Modifications
The following amendments were devised by Andy GPT and his gaming colleagues during the long months of lockdown. My thanks to Andy for sharing them.
Sam Mustafa's Maurice rules cover the period 1690-1790 and provide an interesting and entertaining game. However, no set of rules is so good that it cannot be improved upon and the following amendments are an attempt to introduce greater flexibility into the game. The major changes are: -
Use of hex-based movement
Drawing of action cards
Introduction of specific rules for pike and dragoons
Extended command influence
Modifications to volley, bombardment and combat
Knowledge of Maurice is assumed and you will still need the original rules and cards to play the game as most of the gaming system has been retained.
Drawing the Action Cards
Instead of the active player making one command choice during his round, the player will make two choices. They must both be declared before any cards are drawn. The sequence in which command choices may be made and the number of cards that can be picked up is given in the table below. The active player then executes his two choices, playing any modifying cards that may apply (a printable version of the chart is available here).
The remaining modifications are given below. A printable version is available here.
