Crimean War POW Battle 10

My thanks once again to Tom for the following account of a game played at his house in mid-October 2023

In this Crimean War game the British are on the attack again.

The Russians place their light dragoons (three regiments and one light horse battery) on the far right by their line of supply with orders to sweep round the hill to move to the English line of supply. They deploy their first two infantry brigades to the left of the light dragoons with orders to move forward to take the central hill (allocating 45 objective points to the hill). Further to the right the 5th Infantry Regiment (four battalions) is deployed between the fields and the hill with orders to move forward and head to the central hill. The C-in-C with the artillery (three heavy and two light batteries) and the light infantry (two battalions) are deployed behind the hill with orders to move forward and deploy on the hill. To their left were the heavy dragoons (three regiments and one light horse battery) with orders to move forward and around the British to sweep over the hill on the British side of the table and then to the British line of supply.

The British side has the initiative. The 4th Infantry Brigade moves onto the table to the right of the hill on their side of the table with engage orders to move to the hill on the Russian side of the table. To their left the British C-in-C joins The Guards Brigade with two battalions of Rifles with attack orders to move across the hill on their side of the table (allocating 30 objective points) then to attack the hill on the Russian side of the table (allocating 40 Objective points,) To their left is the 1st Brigade (4 battalions and two medium artillery batteries) with orders to engage to the hill on the Russian side of the table, leaving one infantry battalion and battery to hold the cultivated area to protect their flank. To their Left is the 3rd Infantry Brigade (three infantry battalions and one medium artillery battery) with orders to deploy and protect the line of supply. To their left were two dummy blinds, then the Light Brigade (three regiments) with orders to sweep round the Russian right flank to take the Russian line of supply them move to the hill on the Russian side of the table.

In the game itself the British Light Brigade and the Russian Light Dragoons (both with poor leaders) have an extended confrontation which ends in a stalemate. The two Russian infantry brigades (sixteen battalions) move forward to take the hill in the centre of the table with no opposition from the British. They suffer from fire from three British artillery batteries attached to the British 1st and 3rd Infantry Brigades but hold their ground. The main fight is on the hill on the Russian side of the table. The Russians get of to a slow start (5 out of the 6 leaders only rolling ‘1’ initiative each on turn 1). Due to this the British get to move the Guards and Rifles across the table and deploy ready to attack the hill before the Russians get to deploy their artillery. The Rifles deploy to attack the Russian artillery and light battalions on the hill while two battalions of Guards face off against the Russian 5th Infantry Regiment (four battalions) and the 3rd Battalion acts as a reserve.

The Rifles give one volley against the Russians on the hill then charge into contact. The Russians hold and their defensive fire cuts down large numbers of the Rifles but the Rifles charge home (both acing their moral by rolling a ‘1’) . The melee on the hill lasts several turns with the Russian artillery batteries retiring one at a time. The melee finally swings in the British favour when the reserve Guards Battalion is thrown in and chase the last of the artillery off the hill. The problem for the British is that at the end of the game, of the seven battalions on the hill, the only steady unit is a battalion of Russian light infantry with their C-in-C.

To the left of the hill the Russian heavy cavalry brigade moves forward and finds the British 4th Infantry Brigade. As both are in column of march it took both sides a little time to deploy and the Russian cavalry charges as soon as they can manage, shaking the 1st British Battalion to deploy and forcing them back over several turns and finally routing them when sitting next to the hill on the British side of the table. Later, the remainder of the Russian Dragoons manage to deploy their horse artillery and their remaining regiments and charge another of the 4th Brigade infantry units and shaking them, totally stalling the flank attack on the hill.

At the end of the game the Russians have 80% of their unit strength remaining and have taken their 45 point objective giving them 125 points at the end of the game. The British have 85% of their army remaining but with a Russian heavy dragoon regiment being within a move of the hill on their side of the table means that it is disputed and they do not get the objective points. On their main objective the sole steady Russian unit means the British loose that objective (-40 points) giving them a grand total of 45 points. So, a decisive victory to the Russians.
