Crimean War Battle 17
Played towards the end of June 2024 this game, hosted by Tom P, used his own Principles of War rules. He is also responsible for the account below, for which, many thanks.
Another Crimean game this week. The table has two possible objectives and the Russians win the initiative again leaving the British to lay out their blinds first.
The British position the Heavy Brigade and two dummy blinds on the far right, the cavalry are instructed to move forward and engage any Russians on the opposing hill. To their left is the Guards Brigade with orders to hold the left flank. The Highland Brigade, together with the Divisional Artillery and commander, are deployed behind the hill on the British side of the table with orders to take the hill and form a defensive line in front and assigning 30 points to the objective. To their right is the whole Light Division with orders to move forward along the road to take the Russian line of supply.
The Russians decide to concentrate all their forces on the right wing with the cavalry on the far right flank, the second Brigade 17th division next to them and the Independent Brigade from the 16th Division deployed behind them (ordered to leave two battalions on the hill and assigning 30 objective points) The 1st Brigade 17th Division and the Divisional Artillery are positioned to their left. The 17th Division has orders to move in a right hook to attack the British left flank and to take the hill on the opposite side of the table (allocating 60 victory points). With all units allocated to the attack on the right, the left and the line of supply was only held by two dummy blinds.
The Russian get a good round of initiative on the first bound and move forward rapidly. The Russians miscalculate and move the dummy blinds on their left into cover which restricts their zone of control, allowing the British Light Division to move rapidly down the road after discovering that they have no opposition. The Highland Brigade takes the hill and forms a defensive line with the Divisional Artillery in support. Seeing the vast numbers of Russians moving forward, the Guards Brigade quickly deploys to protect the Highlander's flank. The British C-in-C, seeing the Russian deployment, immediately changes the Cavalry Brigade’s orders for them to move to their right and to hold the Guard's flank.
Seeing the situation, the British C-in-C rushes over to the Light Brigade on the right flank and over the next two turns changes the orders for all units bar one (left to hold the Russian line of supply) to move back to support the Highland Brigade.
The Russian attack develops with the 1st Brigade attacking the Guards and the 2nd Brigade moving through the wood to attack the Highlanders. The combat heightened with increased pressure and the Russians manage to move into contact and to initiate a series of close combats where their firepower advantage was lost. Just as the Russian 1st Brigade starts to push back the Highlanders, Buller’s Brigade (Light Division) arrives on the hill and charges into the melees and manages to force the Russian back.
The Russian Independent Brigade and cavalry move round the flank with the horse artillery giving fire support to the Infantry who attack the Heavy Brigade, forcing them to retire from the table. In the end the Russians run out of steam leaving the British holding the hill.
At the end of the game the British had 85% of their strength remaining and were holding their one 30point objective giving them 115 points. The Russians had 72% of their forces remaining then had taken their 30 point objective but lost their line of supply (- 30 points) and their 60 point objective leaving them with only 12 points. A major victory for the Brits.
