In this game the Zulus deployed Leader 3 and two dummy bases on the right with orders to move forward to the hill on the opposite side of the table, only allocating 20 objective points to the hill as they were expecting the British to deploy on this side of the table. The C-in-C and Leader 4 were deployed in the centre of the table with orders to move towards the hill on their right. The Zulu Leader 2 was deployed on the left with orders to attack the hill on the British side of the table, allocating 40 objective points as they were expecting the British to deploy on the opposite flank.
Seeing the initial Zulu deployment the British moved onto the table on the right hand side. The C-in-C ordered his forces over the right hand hill, leaving Leader 2 with the artillery and baggage on the hill, with the two units of NNC to protect them, the regular infantry moving in advance of the hill. Leader Two took the four units of irregular horse forward to the half way line to cover the regulars while they deployed.
In move one the Zulus move forward with Leaders 2 and 4 advancing to within 12” of the irregular light horse while the C-in-C, Leader 3 and the two dummy blinds move towards the empty hill on the British right. On move two the Boers bring down a heavy fire on the advancing Zulus, forcing several units to retire and fall back. Seeing the Zulu deployment the light horse are ordered to move round into the long grass on the British left to protect the flank while the regulars deploy in the centre of the table facing the Zulu attack.
Over the next few moves the Zulu commander changes his and the 3rd Leader's orders to swing left instead of Right and to move to the hill on the opposite flank. The light horse are slowly forced back by the Zulu C-in-C and Leader 3 with the light horse repeatedly falling back when charged until two units are finally caught and forced to rout or retire off table. Leader 4 moves through the long grass to hit the ‘hinge’ between the regulars and irregular horse, hitting the mounted infantry and irregular horse, having several charges repulsed before finally managing to stick. The lone Leader two spends the whole game attacking the British regular infantry with repeated charges and keeping them in place while the other three leaders attack the irregular units on the flank.
When the Game ends the British are on the back foot and being forced back by the relentless Zulu attacks, but there was insufficient time for the Zulus to reach the last hill.
The final result was that the British had 85% of their forces remaining but had not allocated any objective points. The Zulus had only 55% of their army remaining and had captured the hill on their own side of the table (+20 points) plus the hill on the opposite their home village (+20 points) but had not managed to reach their third objective (–40 points), leaving them with a net 55 points. So a convincing victory to the British, but with one more move the Zulu flanking forces would have overrun the irregular horse and been on the hill giving them 80 objective points and a 135 v 85 point victory, so the game could have swung either way.
